these two….

hiked up a “Michigan mountain” at Johnson Park in Grand Rapids, MI for me in 90 degree weather

were down with my crazy idea to do photos in their empty brand new home

rode a tandem bike at both their engagement session and at the end of their reception…

and are just all around the coolest couple ever. When I first met with Lindsey + Mike at a coffee shop in Zeeland, MI I knew right away they were my style. They both love the outdoors, biking and craft beer. (I think it was more the last one when I was like YUP best friends forever). From then on we became good friends through romping around at their engagement session and having the most relaxed day ever at their wedding. Lindsey wore her mother’s wedding gown (altered!) and Mike brewed the beer! It was a team effort from family and friends and was truly magical! And the icing on the cake was i got to spend the day with one of my favorite photographers Ryan Inman who second shot for me. Many of these rad images are his so check him out!

DANCE PARTY 2015

After doing my Best of 2015 post, I was realizing how much I LOVE dance photos. LIKE LOVE THEM. More than anything. So I decided to write a blog post about my love of your DANCE PARTY and share my favorite photos from 2015’s dance parties.

Light trails are not for everyone, but they are my favorite! They give a real pop of FUN to the dance party photos and make for fun colorful imagery. I do a combination of light trails, double exposures, and standard photos during receptions. The first two are always my favorites.

When planning your wedding, it is always a good plan to decorate your venue with lots of fun colorful lights or hire a DJ who has lots of fun colorful lights if you are into the look of light trails. I have yet to have a dance party include glow lights but those would also make for some ROCKING amazing light trail photos (hint hint to my 2016 couples!). Hope you enjoy this party in a blog post!

BEST OF 2015

2015 was amazing. I spent the year capturing 24 couples, 5 seniors, 14 families, 3 boudoir sessions, my first birth story and a smattering of other fun personal work. I got to second shoot for some amazing artists: Catie Bartlett, Cassandra Zetta, Jill Devries, Abbey Moore, Ryan Inman, Sydney Marie, and Meg VanKampen. I was able to travel across the country with Catie for Photo Field Trip and meet a ton of amazing, inspiring photographers. I got holed up in a cabin for a few days with another group of amazing photographers where we bonded like nothing I have ever been a part of before. I traveled to Boston for an engagement session and California for an elopement. I was able to photograph my parents, help run the family farm and do a show with my local theatre group. I was a part of two amazing styled shoots (thanks Ashley Paige!). This year has been so busy and so fun and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Also thank you to all of the amazing photographers who second shot for me, Alycia Choroszucha, Sydney Miller, Ryan Inman and my wonderful intern for the year Kristi Shultz.

Somedays I wake up and feel like crap about everything I do, I think every artist does. But then I make a post like this and realize I have the greatest job in the world and as long as I keep pushing myself, I will keep making rad stuff happen. I am so excited to see what 2016 has in store for me, I am hoping to travel for a few weddings, I get to be a part of another local theatre show and already have 10 couples joining tribe Rachel Kaye for their weddings this year. I am so lucky to be a part of an amazing, supportive community of other photographers. I can’t thank them enough for their support and kindness this year. They have all helped me grow in ways I didn’t even know possible.

BRING IT ON 2016!

Grand Rapids Engagement | Angie + Justin

Grand Rapids Engagement 2016-01-08_0001

Angie and Justin get married TOMORROW! I had my last session of 2015 doing their downtown Grand Rapids Engagements and get to celebrate my first wedding of the year with them at one of my favorite Grand Rapids venues, Cheney Place! I cannot wait for tomorrow and wish them all the best.

We had a very foggy day for their engagements, and rather warm for Michigan! We romped through some fun, industrial parts of Grand Rapids and played around. Tomorrow is just going to be awesome!

Traverse City Wedding Photographer | Kate + Adam

Ahhh this gorgeous tree in this gorgeous field. Who would have thought, a day later a giant storm would tear through this little town and take away this tree. From the beginning of talking to Kate and Adam about their big day up near Traverse City, I knew this tree was important to them. Kate included a bunch of photos she had taken from their visit to it. This tree resides on a Centennial Farm in Williamsburg, MI. Kate + Adam are the last people ever to be photographed under it, they actually were able to salvage some wood from the tree to make wedding rings out of.

Their guests rode up to the tree on a horse drawn carriage where there were delicious appetizers and cozy picnic blankets awaiting them. They gathered around drinking champagne and chatting until the ceremony began. Kates father and sister officiated the wedding (and were so hilarious I almost died a few times!) which finished with everyone popping sparkling wine bottles to their first kiss! Kate and Adam then grabbed a bunch of appetizers and walked through the woods to where their boat was tied up. They made their way across the water to their family cabin where they then had a delicious farm table style dinner, all the food for the day was catered by the amazing Boathouse Restaurant. Dinner was accompanied by wonderful toasts by family and friends and their first dance was sung by Kates brother!

Traverse City, MI Wedding Photographer | Abbey + Neil

Now that the choas of 2015 is over, I can begin to blog some of my favorite weddings of the year! I got to spend 2 glorious Saturdays with Abbey and Neil. The first of which was their small, intimate ceremony up in Traverse City in June. They chose Willow Vineyards up in Suttons Bay for their ceremony venue with a small after party/reception at The Filling Station in Traverse City.

Abbey chose to have a costume change between the Ceremony and Reception and changed into a cocktail length gown. This made things really fun for photos as we had more than one dress to play with. Plus who doesn’t like a good costume change. Abbey and I went to pre-school together which made this wedding even more fun! I knew a lot of the guests and family members which makes the day go so smoothly. Abbey chose to have a first look with her grandmother (who doubled as the officiant and did an amazing job!) and her two fathers which were some of the most special moments of the day. They also chose to wait to see each other until Abbey came down the aisle. Whether you chose a first look or not, this moment is always so special. Also, thanks to Alycia for second shooting this one with me. She is a joy to work with (and a few of these images are hers!).
