The Making of Harry Potter – An American in England

The Making of Harry Potter in Londonthe making of harry potter001

WARNING: if you do not care at all about Harry Potter or what I was up to when across the pond. This blog post will be boring. Feel free to carry on as you were as I delve into the Making of Harry Potter in London. And the story of the day surrounding this trip.

On this day, I woke up, had a delicious English breakfast and headed out to do some really touristy sight-seeing. THE WHOLE TRIP so far I had one goal in mind, to go see the Making of Harry Potter. SADLY, tickets were completely sold out on the days I could go. The night before I had noticed something, I was checking tickets and about 2 hours before the last ‘tour’, tickets magically appeared to go on sale. So I figured I would try again tomorrow and see what would happen.

So I am on the bus at about 3pm to head to Westminster Abbey from seeing St. Pauls Cathedral and I decide to check my phone to see if there are any tickets. SURE ENOUGH there are tickets for the last tour (6pm). I SCRAMBLE to purchase my tickets on the bus, while having no idea where said bus is going or where I should be going (note: this is BEFORE i threw my phone into a toilet…so I still had a smart phone to tell me where to go!)

TICKETS WERE PURCHASED!

THE LOCATION: a 1 hour train ride away….. + a bus to train station, + bus from train to HP Tour….EEK!

I quickly jumped off the double decker bus and realized I had to get on a bus at the same station to get me to the train station. I waited….

I waited for what seemed like 2 hours, but what was likely 5 minutes. And I couldn’t wait any longer! So I took the one and only taxi ride I took my entire stay in London to get to the station. I quickly ran inside, scanned my Oyster card and realized I had no idea what train I was supposed to take.

At that exact moment a woman comes running up to the man at the station asking what train she has to get on to get to the Making of Harry Potter. He points at a train, she starts running, so I start running.

We both get on the train about the same time, she says ‘IS THIS THE TRAIN TO HARRY POTTER’? and I respond ‘GOSH I HOPE SO’. I learn her name is Barbara, she is from Brazil and she is awesome. We sit on the train together, take the bus from the train to the tour and take the tour together. She was so much fun to explore and enjoy this tour with, she is also a HUGE harry potter fan. We both got butter-beer and it was nice to have someone to take photos of me for once!

I spent the next 3 hours just being like a giddy school girl running around loving all the harry potter stuff and taking way too many photos of inanimate objects, like I do on EVERY trip, just this time, I AM SHARING!

EVERYTHING was magical. Seriously my mind was blown. I should have done the audio tour (but it gives me a reason to go back again!). When I finally got back to my air bnb that night I was so satisfied and exhausted. The ONE touristy thing I really wanted to do, I HAD ACCOMPLISHED. And it was so so much fun~!`

Of course the tour had to end with a wall of wands like Olivanders, and this amazing quote by J.K. Rowling, which always brings me to tears. Not to mention that when I stepped foot into the room with Hogwarts and Hedwigs Lament was playing…and I just started bawling. They did everything right. So right. And I was beyond happy with this trip.

If you are heading to England and love Harry potter do check out getting tickets AHEAD of time…. I was lucky, but most people are not!

The Cheney Place Wedding Grand Rapids Michigan |Angie + Justin

Cheney Place Wedding the_cheney_place_wedding06

Winter weddings are more fun at The Cheney Place in Grand Rapids, MI, and they are even more fun when you spend it with the greatest couple ever surrounded by an amazing group of friends and family. Angie and Justin asked me to be a part of their day and I couldn’t have been more excited, these two are not only so in love but are also the best of friends and it shows. When I first met with them at Founders brewery to chat about their day I was enamored with them (and also with the amazing beer choices they were making… um hello mixed beers? what have I been doing with my life) and their love story. On top of that they were having their dog in the wedding (and had him in their save the date photos!).. I mean come on he was so cute RUNNING down the aisle towards Justin! I am a sucker for dogs and Chance was the most fun furry brides mate dude to have around.

This day was just lovely, from arriving while they were still setting up and getting ready, and getting to know all of the family and friends well, to riding around with the bridal party in a party bus just to drink, to dancing the night away to the sweet jams of my favorite DJ this day was just the bees knees. And a FANTASTIC way to start of 2016 season right!

And huge thanks to my girl Katie for second shooting this with me! She was so amazing and some of these images are hers!

Michigan Birth Photographer | Raven Birth Story

Michigan Birth Photographermichigan birth photographer 01

About 8:30pm on February 1st, I am in rehearsal for Grease and get a phone call from my mother. “Your client is in labor and tried to call you! YOU HAVE TO GO NOW!”. I scramble to leave the theatre, almost forgetting my shoes and coat even though it is snowy and cold outside. I RUSH HOME to grab my gear, thinking I still had a few days until my standard “10 days before due date, 10 days after” where I carry my gear everywhere with me. Then I head off in “at the speed limit ;)” toward Holland Hospital.

I have never been here before. It is empty by the time I get there and I scramble to find where the birthing unit is. A wonderful nurse says to me “I’m heading there too! Follow me!”. At this time it seemed like everything was going at a snails pace. Her walking down the hallway, the time it took her to press the elevator button, the time it took in said elevator. I felt like I was missing everything and couldn’t do anything about it!

But lucky me! I arrived with PLENTY of time to spare, just able to see them checking Sam and the baby right before they took off all wires so she could have as natural of a birth as possible. I spent the next 7 hours watching her labor every few minutes. Enduring this incredible pain and then literally taking a photo of me moments later (because of course, she is also a photographer!). I spent a lot of my time enjoying the moments between her laboring taking photos, able to chat and ask how things are, and the times while she was laboring snapping a few photographs and then just empathizing with the pain she was in.

Then it was finally time for her to push! I took my spot at her head, in the tiny space between the bed and wall in order to have an unobtrusive point of view of the birth. She was a rock-star. I have never seen a woman give birth completely naturally and it was the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed. I still can’t believe how powerful and strong this first-time birth momma was. She was joined in the delivery room by her husband and her sister. Her sister was so beautifully emotional during the birth, and even got to cut the cord (because dad has a fear of blood! He was a trooper too!).

It seemed right, on mothers day to share my 2nd birth story ever. I was so grateful of Sam to let me photograph Raven arriving in the world, and so in awe of her strength and power. I had the pleasure of meeting up with them a few weeks later and getting to hold the little girl I had the pleasure of watching join the world. Thanks again to the amazing staff at the Boven Birth Center at Holland Hospital for being so amazing to me and this beautiful family!

PSA: Back Up Your Photos! | An American in London Part I

Back Up Your Photos! IMG_4837IMG_4836

Here you have it. My TWO photos that exist from the beginning of my trip to London/Wales. Except for those with my ‘fancy’ camera which includes these 2 photos, my trip to Warner Bro’s Making of Harry potter and the engagement session I did, this is all I have from 3 amazing days hopping all around London.

These. Two. Photos

1- a selfie (of course)

2- a dog (of course)

Because I epically failed. I failed at something I tell my clients to do all the time. I spent three days snapping pics with my iPhone only because carrying around a giant DSLR can be daunting and is less sneaky ninja style, and it was just my style. That’s how I take my personal photos! My phone! (JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!). My iPhone has a backup to the cloud, but did I select to back it up? NOPE. I did not. Did I think to backup the photos from before my trip on my phone before I left for Europe? NOPE, I did not.

So three days into SNAP Photography Festival, when my phone decided to take an epic swan dive from my hoodie pocket into the incredibly deep trenches of a flushing toilet in Europe (have you seen how deep those things are? I mean it is really interesting, less water etc. But when you drop your phone…. it is completely submerged and THAT much farther from your quick ninja reflexes), I realized I really should have taken my own advice to heart. I did (almost) everything right once I retrieved my well washed phone from the toilet. I dried it off, turned it off and then ran to the kitchen at fforest to ask for some rice. The wonderful staff there brought out a saucepan full of rice and I submerged my phone. I then looked like a real true American idiot walking around with said saucepan of rice in one hand (with the phone invisible), and a cup of tea in the other. Many people commented asking if rice was for breakfast…or if it was just ‘for the vegans’.

I then put the saucepan of rice into my tent (and eventually switched it to a zip lock baggie) and grabbed my ‘big girl camera’ and captured the rest of SNAP and my trip with that.

Three days later, I attempted to plug in/turn on my iPhone. I thought this would be smart. Now, of course, everything I read tells me this was the worst idea ever, that I should have brought it right in for water damage repair etc. and I have likely destroyed the motherboard of my precious iPhone.

So while I am insanely careful to backup my photos for work, I am not so great at my own personal photos. Because I constantly take pictures with my giant pro camera, I prefer to take my personal photos with my iPhone. It is just handy and easy and so convenient. I still have hopes that the data can be recovered at least from the phone, but I am missing out on some awesome memories which would have helped supplement the story of my trip I want to tell because I failed to take my own advice.

So photographer friends, go backup your personal photos RIGHT NOW. Better yet, print them. To my clients, BACKUP ALL THE PHOTOS. If you are an amazon prime member you can upload a TON of personal photos into their cloud (and yes! i use this for my personal photos…obviously just not en route). If you go on vacation, HAVE YOUR PHONE BACKUP TO THE CLOUD. It is so worth it to have tons of backups of these personal memories.

Every time I think about these photos I feel like I literally flushed them down the toilet. I mean in a way I did (thanks, European toilets!), but also, I missed a crucial step in protecting my personal photography, BACKING IT UP. So go, go do it RIGHT NOW everyone. Back up your photos, because you never know when your phone might decide it wants to become a circus acrobat and leap from your hoodie pocket into a European toilet.

Grand Haven Maternity Photographer Michigan | Destiny + Boys (and soon a GIRL!)

Grand Haven Maternity Photographer

THESE FOUR (almost 5…) ahhh I love them! Destiny is a badass. She is a wonderful mother. An amazing wife. Fantastic photographer and a brilliant student. I admire her so much as a friend and fellow photographer, and love love love spending time with her family. It was so great to do updated family photographs with her last summer, and I secretly hoped as soon as she announced her pregnancy that she would ask me to do her maternity photos.

AND THEN SHE DID!

I was so excited, we quickly started trying to pick dates knowing her due date was creeping close and closer and closer. Finally, we found the right date, where it wouldn’t be snowing (thanks… April in Michigan!) and not insanely windy/cold. We decided to meet up at Rosy Mound Natural Area right on the lakeshore in Grand Haven, MI. It was the perfect mix of green-stuff (thank you pine trees!) and gorgeous sandy dunes.

Her three favorite men joined us for the beginning of the session. I am so happy she got to have these photos with them before her baby girl, Shiloh enters the world (word on the streets is: she is being induced today!). I always mix up my maternity sessions with a little bit of light and airy, and a lot of moody portraits. The light was perfectly soft and gorgeous for our sunset session in Grand Haven! I can’t wait to meet baby girl Shiloh and am wishing them all the best of luck today!

Molly and Neil are one of this summers couples and last fall we got together to shoot their engagements at Eastmanville Farms in Grand Haven, MI. They live in New York City together and are getting married in Spring Lake this August. It has been so fun hearing about their plans for the wedding from afar, the date is coming up quickly and I cannot wait for their wedding. This fall engagement session had the most beautiful light and TONS of wind which made for great looking animated GIFs.
